What Should You Know Before Getting Body Waxing?
Share
Body waxing is worth it because it removes hair from the root for 3 to 6 weeks of smooth skin, causes softer and finer regrowth over time, provides gentle exfoliation by removing dead skin cells, and reduces irritation compared to daily shaving when done professionally with the right type of wax for each body area.
Hi, I'm Rue, one of the estheticians here at The Secret Garden Salon & Spa. Almost every day, a client sits in my chair and tells me they are just so tired of shaving. The bumps, the five o'clock shadow, the daily routine. It gets old fast, especially during our New Jersey summers.
They're curious about waxing but also a little nervous. They always ask, "Is it really worth it?"
My answer is always a resounding yes.
If you're ready to ditch the razor but want the real story on waxing from a pro, you're in the right place. Let's talk about what to expect, how to make it comfortable, and why it might just be the best thing you do for your skin.
Can Waxing Really End Years of Razor Burn and Bumps?
A client named Kristina from Manalapan came to me last May completely frustrated. She had a beach vacation to the Jersey Shore booked for Memorial Day weekend and was dreading it.
"I've been shaving my bikini line for fifteen years," she told me. "And I'm done. I get razor burn every single time. By day two, the bumps start. By day three, I'm wearing shorts over my bathing suit because I'm embarrassed."
She showed me photos from a trip to Cancun three years ago. Red bumps along her entire bikini line. She'd stayed covered up the whole trip.
"I've tried everything," she said. "New razors, exfoliating, expensive shave creams. Nothing works. I have three days at the beach with my girlfriends and I want to actually wear a bikini without hiding."
She'd considered waxing before but was terrified of the pain. Her sister had gotten a bikini wax years ago at a different salon and said it was excruciating.
"I'm honestly scared," she admitted. "But I'm more scared of another vacation ruined by razor burn."
I explained the difference between the wax her sister probably experienced and what we use. "Most of the horror stories come from soft wax used in the wrong places. We use hard wax for bikini. It grips the hair, not your skin. It's a completely different experience."
"How bad is it really?" she asked.
"It's not nothing," I told her honestly. "But it's quick. The worst part is over in seconds. And then you have weeks of smooth skin instead of days of bumps."
She took a deep breath. "Okay. Let's do it."
During the service, I talked her through everything. Deep breath in as I applied. Long exhale as I removed. We chatted about her vacation plans. It was over in fifteen minutes.
"That's it?" she said, surprised. "That was so much better than I expected."
When she looked in the mirror, she actually laughed. "My skin looks amazing. No redness. No bumps. I can't believe I waited this long."
Three weeks later, she texted me from the Shore. A photo of her in a bikini on the beach. No shorts. No cover up.
"ZERO BUMPS," she wrote. "This is the first vacation in years where I'm not hiding. I wore a bikini to the beach bar last night. I felt like a different person."
She's been back every five weeks since. "I'm never going back to shaving," she told me at her last appointment. "I wasted fifteen years being miserable when this was an option the whole time."
So, What Exactly Happens During a Wax?
At its core, waxing is simple: we apply warm wax to your skin, and it removes hair directly from the root. Unlike shaving, which just cuts the hair at the surface, this process gives you weeks of smooth skin.
But the benefits go way beyond just being hair free for longer.
- Softer, Finer Regrowth: When your hair does grow back, it's often much softer and thinner than before. The sharp, stubbly feeling you get a day after shaving? That's a thing of the past.
- A Little Exfoliation: The wax also removes the topmost layer of dead skin cells. Leaving your skin feeling incredibly smooth and bright.
- Less Irritation Over Time: For many people, waxing actually leads to fewer ingrown hairs and less irritation. Compared to the constant friction of shaving. Kristina spent fifteen years with razor burn and red bumps. Three weeks after her first wax, she texted me from the beach with zero irritation.
We can wax almost anywhere. From legs and arms to more sensitive areas like the bikini line, underarms, and face. It's all about what makes you feel most confident and comfortable.
Hard Wax vs. Soft Wax: Why It Matters for Your Skin
You might hear estheticians talk about different types of wax. But the two main players are soft wax and hard wax. Here at The Secret Garden, I almost exclusively use hard wax for sensitive areas. There's a very good reason for that.
Soft wax is the kind that uses a paper or cloth strip for removal. It's great for large areas like legs or arms. It's efficient and works well on finer hair.
Hard wax is different. It's applied warm, and as it cools, it hardens and shrink wraps around the hair itself. Not your skin. We don't need a strip to remove it. The wax itself becomes the strip.
This is a game changer for delicate spots. Like your bikini line, underarms, or for a facial waxing service. It's much gentler and significantly reduces discomfort.
Kristina's sister had a bad experience years ago with soft wax used on her bikini line. That's exactly why we use hard wax for sensitive areas. It grips the hair, not your skin.
Choosing the right wax for the right area is a huge part of ensuring you have a great experience.
Let's Be Honest: Does Waxing Hurt?
This is the number one question I get. And I will never lie to you: it's not completely painless, especially the first time. You are removing hair from the root, after all.
But there is so much we can do to make it as comfortable as possible. It's not the scary experience you see in movies, I promise.
Kristina was terrified based on her sister's horror story. During her service, we talked, she breathed, and it was over in fifteen minutes. "That was so much better than I expected," she said.
Here's my pro approved plan for minimizing pain.
Before Your Appointment:
- Let it Grow: Your hair needs to be about a quarter of an inch long. Or the length of a grain of rice. This allows the wax to get a good grip.
- Gently Exfoliate: A day or two before your wax, use a gentle scrub on the area. This helps remove dead skin and prevent future ingrowns.
- Skip the Lotions: Come to your appointment with clean, dry skin. Avoid lotions, oils, or deodorants on the area we'll be waxing.
- Consider Your Timing: Your skin can be more sensitive right before and during your period. If you can, try to schedule your appointment for the week after.
- Stay Hydrated, but Skip the Caffeine: Drinking lots of water is great for your skin. But try to avoid caffeine or alcohol right before your appointment. They can make your skin more sensitive.
During Your Appointment:
The most important thing you can do is breathe. Take a deep breath in as I apply the wax. A long, full exhale as I remove it.
And talk to me! Tell me if you're nervous. We can take a break, chat about your weekend plans. Anything to help you relax.
A good esthetician works quickly and confidently. To make it easier on you.
How Does Waxing Compare to Shaving or Laser?
You have options. And it's important to know how they stack up. Everyone's goals and budgets are different.
Waxing vs. Shaving: Shaving is cheap and fast. But the results last maybe a day or two. It can cause razor burn, nicks, and prickly stubble. Waxing costs more upfront, but you get 3 to 6 weeks of smoothness. The long term cost in time and sanity? Priceless.
Waxing vs. Laser Hair Removal: Laser is a fantastic option for permanent hair reduction. But it's a big investment. It requires multiple sessions over several months. Can be quite expensive. And doesn't work on all hair colors and skin tones. Waxing is a great middle ground. It's more effective and longer lasting than shaving. Without the high cost and commitment of laser.
For many of my clients in Marlboro and Manalapan, waxing is the perfect fit for their lifestyle. It keeps them smooth for weeks without the daily hassle. Or the huge expense of other methods.
The Aftercare Rules Every Pro Swears By
What you do in the 48 hours after your wax is just as important as the service itself. Your pores are open. Your skin is a little sensitive. So it needs some TLC.
Just remember the "5 S's" to avoid for the first day or two.
- Sun: Keep the waxed area out of direct sunlight. To prevent burns and irritation.
- Sweat: Skip the intense workout at the gym.
- Saunas: That includes steam rooms and very hot showers.
- Swimming: Avoid pools, hot tubs, and the ocean. To prevent infection.
- Synthetic Clothing: Stick to loose, breathable cotton clothes.
After about two days, you can start gently exfoliating the area 2 to 3 times a week. This is the single best thing you can do. To prevent ingrown hairs. And keep your skin healthy and smooth until your next appointment.
Kristina followed the 5 S's and exfoliated twice a week. Her results lasted five full weeks with no ingrowns.
Your Top Waxing Questions, Answered
How long will my results last?
Typically 3 to 6 weeks, depending on how fast your hair grows. Some areas like legs may last longer. While faster growing areas like underarms may need more frequent maintenance. Most clients find a rhythm that works for their schedule after a few appointments.
Will waxing make my hair stop growing back forever?
No, but with consistent waxing, many people find their hair grows back much finer and sparser over time. The hair follicle can weaken with repeated waxing. Which makes regrowth softer and less noticeable. This is why long term waxing clients often need less frequent appointments.
Is it okay for men to get waxed?
Absolutely! We welcome everyone at The Secret Garden. Back, chest, and brow waxing are all very popular services. Many male clients love the smooth results and reduced maintenance. The same principles apply regardless of gender.
I have really sensitive skin. Can I still get waxed?
Yes! This is where seeing a professional esthetician makes all the difference. We use high quality hard wax designed for sensitive skin. We can tailor the service and aftercare to your specific needs. Sometimes a calming treatment like a Hydrafacial on a different area can be a great way to soothe skin in general.
What if I've been shaving for years and I'm scared to switch?
Many clients come to me after years of shaving frustration. Kristina from Manalapan shaved for fifteen years and dealt with razor burn every single time. She was terrified of waxing pain but more tired of hiding in shorts at the beach. Her first wax took fifteen minutes. She texted me from the Jersey Shore with zero bumps for the first time in years. The transition is easier than you think. And the relief is immediate.
